Broken Heart South Jersey Gay Men Choir JC McMurphy Books

I was asked to read an ARC of this novella by JC McMurphy, in exchange for an honest review. I can truly say I have enjoyed the three stories I've read by this author, in particular the South New Jersey Gay Men's Choir series books. It's nice to revisit with reoccurring characters, as well as meeting the new ones. Sometimes such as in this case we are reintroduced to a briefly mentioned character, Malcolm Baldwin a self employed graphic designer. He refurbished the Choir's website, showcasing them in a better light, one which he was hoping to be a part of.

Unfortunately Malcolm has some health issues that interfere with some of his daily functioning when he gets stressed. A serious heart ailment he tries to ignore in face of the impending birth of his nephew. His younger sister, Sarah became pregnant while in college and her not so great choice in boyfriends ran away from his paternal responsibilities. Malcolm stepped in and then some. Seemingly more Interested in the prenatal care of his sister's unborn child than Sarah was.

If you enjoy MM stories that involve a sibling's pregnancy and their child(ren) this story is for you. Uncle Malcolm certainly acted like a proud, though extremely anxious father. I love reading about a man experiencing another's pregnancy, doctor's appointments, labor, birth, and newborn care, especially something as humorous as diaper changes. It is through his sister's pregnancy that Malcolm meets a male Nurse Practitioner named Devon. A strong mutual attraction sparks between the two of them.

Luckily with his medical training Devon is astute enough to notice that Malcolm had a serious problem he'd been trying to hard to hide. He is empathic enough to suggest & gently encourage that Malcolm go see a very good cardiac specialist whose reputation Devon is familiar with. And Devon was also concerned about Malcolm's health for the purely selfish reason that he wanted him well so they can get together. Despite some initial nervousness they seem to progress into a sweet couple. Devon loves to hear and compliments Malcolm whenever he sings.

While the storyline centers around Malcolm, his health, and his pregnant sister, his new romance with Devon, as well as the Gay Men's Choir also play a very important role. This is an entertaining story with some very interesting twists. If you enjoy this series this is a nice addition and even if you haven't read any of the previous books you can read it as a Stand alone without feeling you were just dropped into an ongoing series.

Broken Heart South Jersey Gay Men Choir JC McMurphy Books Reviews

I am truly enjoying this series! Broken Heart is very well written, the characters practically leap off the page, and the story is sweet and certainly pulls on the heartstrings. The story revolves around Malcolm's life. I would've liked to have seen a bit more of the romance between Malcolm and Devon and learned about Malcolm's outcome with his heart condition, but the beauty of this series is we get to revisit past characters as the story goes, so hopefully I'll get to see more of this couple later. Overall, the story did hold my interest and I liked the characters, giving me one more reason to keep reading this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This is the first book that I've read by this author and I'm impressed enough to check out the rest of the series.

It started a little slow but picked up pretty quickly.

Malcolm initially seemed weak regardless of his heart condition but as the book progressed he proved anything but.

He was very supportive of his sister and nephew and there's little angst to this but the characters work well together.

He and Devon, a nurse he meets at the hospital when his sister goes into labour make a great couple and I was disappointed when the book ended.

With the support of Devon he finally takes the step of seriously looking into the possibility of gaining funding for the heart operation that he needs, which will allow him to achieve his dream of joining the Gay Men's Choir.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book.
Malcolm Baldwin is a work from home website designer, living and taking care of his younger pregnant sister. Malcolm suffers from a serious heart condition, which is progressively getting worse, especially when he's under stress. He loves to sing, and after developing a website for the NJ Gay Mens Choir, he has an audition to sing in the choir. He sings beautifully, but the stress causes him to pass out half way through. His finances and debts don't allow him the resources for the heart operation that will heal him. He meets Devon, an up-beat optimistic nurse practitioner in the hospitals neonatal department. They are instantly attracted to each other and fall in love. The story of how the NJ Gay Mens Choir helps Malcolm is amazing. I love this series and enjoy reading snippets of characters from previous books.
This gay romance is well named as there are several Broken Hearts in the story. Malcolm, a young man with a defective physical heart. It breaks his heart when he is unable to sign with the choir because the anxiety causes his heart to speed up. Malcolm is a man of integrity, the sort I would call "good husband material". He is loyal to his sister whose heart has been broken by her bf Pete who skedaddled the moment he found out she was pregnant. During visits to the hospital regarding the pregnancy, Malcolm meets Devon, a nurse in the neo-natal department. (I learn a wee bit more than I ever wanted to know about obstetrics.)

I dislike reading books that have a lot of spelling or grammatical errors - this story is free of them, so it was a joy to read. It also had several surprises along the road to romance - which is always a plus.

BTW, if Devon becomes available, I'll take him as a husband. He's one of those characters who is always positive, never seems to have a bad day. I'd be pleased to have him sitting across the breakfast table from me every morning.
