With her cabin a pile of ashes and her life in pieces, champion Alaskan "musher" Jessie Arnold has gratefully accepted a friend's proposal that she drive his motor home up from Idaho, along the Alaska Highway—a breathtaking, two thousand-mile-long route winding past hot springs, glaciers, and ice-blue lakes. But the idyllic trip takes a dark turn when a teenage hitchhiker brings terror aboard. Frightened and alone, Patrick Cutler disappears just before the police inform Jessie that the young runaway is wanted in connection with two shocking murders. Suddenly she is cast into a raging maelstrom of dark secrets and deadly consequences. And the cold and empty road she's traveling could be leading her not to her home... but to a grave in the trackless wilderness.

Praise for Sue Henry

Dead North An Alaska Mystery Book 8 edition by Sue Henry Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Since discovering Sue Henry last December, I've read everything I can get my hands on, and have been eagerly awaiting the release of this book. What would Jessie get involved in now? Would Jessie and Alex finally come to their senses and get back together? What about the dogs?
To answer the first question - she's driving a Winnabego through the Northwestern United States and Canada toward Alaska where she runs into a desperate teenaged runaway and a spunky, older woman named Maxie (who bears a striking resemblance to the author's own portrait on the inside jacket cover). There's the usual tension - including a *chilling* description of a car accident with a tractor-trailer and angst set against beautiful descriptions of the country-side which make Henry such a compelling author. The end has a twist that I saw coming, but only in the last few pages.
To answer the second question . . . well, let's just say that was the book's only flaw.
And the third question - Tank is his usual, brave, intuitive, and loyal self.
But for the notable absence of Alex, and the possible conceit in the character of Maxie, this book more than lived up to my expectations, and I'll now, infortunately, have even longer to wait for the next one.

Dead North An Alaska Mystery Book 8 edition by Sue Henry Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This was another enjoyable read for me by Sue Henry. She does a very good job of writing a good mystery with good characters, twists and turns, and finally a terrific conclusion.
Sue Henry's writing brings places to life.. A friend and I traveled the ALCAN in 2012 and it is all so vivid in her (Sue Henry) writing. Made me want to do it again and see places I gave only a quick look. The story keeps you hanging on the edge and I do enjoy all her mysteries..
I haven't written a book review before, but Dead North, by Sue Henry, was such a disappointment that I had to share my thoughts with others who might be thinking of buying this book.
The first thing that bothered me was the author's style of writing. Ms. Henry tends to write in long sentences filled with parenthetic expressions and series of items. She frequently uses participial phrases at the beginning of a sentence. In other words, there were an excessive number of commas that kept bringing me to a halt while rushing me through long gushes of words. It's a good thing that type is no longer set by hand as the typesetter would have run out of commas long before the book was finished! Here is a random example from page 90
"Restoring her balance with a hand to the wall, Jessie continued down the street and soon discovered a small bookstore, where she was delighted to find a short biography of Edith Cavell, a British nurse who smuggled Allied soldiers out of Belgium to Holland during World War I, was captured and executed by the Germans, and for whom one of the highest of the beautiful local peaks was named."
This example illustrates another fault in the book. While most reviewers were very positive when speaking about the background of the Alaskan (and Canadian) countryside, my impression was that she was giving entirely too much detail about things that don't bear on the story. Initially I was looking for how Edith Cavell or World War I or even the peak figured in the story later. I soon learned that these forays into descriptions of the countryside or local history were not significant to the story, but merely tidbits of information that the author found interesting and felt she had to share. If you want to see how similar information is both interesting on its own and integrated into a story, I recommend Nevada Barr.
Lastly, the story did not come together well at the end. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't go into detail. Let me just say that, while all the elements of a good mystery were there, they just didn't mesh into a satisfying whole.
Love Sue Henry's works about her Alaskan characters and mysteries confronting them. Her stories include good descriptions of access roads from the Lower Forty as well of places in that state. These allow me to revisit trips of a lifetime my husband and I made years ago to visit sons in Anchorage.
Wow,this is one of she Henry's books best work .she has a way with telling a story . its very hard to put this book down ! I am a big fan of Sue Henry's work !
Really enjoyed this book. I have just recently started reading this series of books and they are addictive. They are interesting, well written, you never really know the outcome until the very end. I would recommend this series of mysteries to everyone
Jessie Arnold seems to be getting her life on track in this episode. Frankly, I wasn't fond of Alex Jensen in Death Takes Passage, the only other Sue Henry book I've read. He seemed a stereotype, and the romance didn't ring true. Now Jessie seems stronger and more capable. RVers are sure to enjoy the descriptions of Jessie's and Maxie's motorhome adventures. I confess that another reason I particularly enjoyed this book is that it was given to me by David Hett and Carolyn Allen, whose Dawson Peaks Resort and RV Park is the setting for the story's climax! Just another example of Sue Henry's careful attention to real Alaskan backgrounds.
